Our next grep command example searches for all occurrences of the text string joe within all files of the current directory: grep 'joe'. Many other options exist, and in combination with other tools, it serves as an invaluable utility for performing administrative tasks on your Linode. This option only displays lines only if the whole expression is found. w : By default, zgrep command displays lines even if the expression is found as a sub-string. ![]() These are simply a few basic ways to use grep. -l : This option is used to display the names of the files with the expression present in it. This example will search the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file for strings of alphabetic characters that are 16-20 characters long, but you can use any regex pattern you like. Regex patterns are also supported by the -E option if you want to search for a set of strings rather than one literal: grep -E "]" /etc/ssh/sshd_config This will monitor your Apache error logs, and display only the lines of output that contain the given string. You may also redirect output from a command to grep using a pipe: tail -f /var/log/apache/error.log | grep 'some text' abhishekLHB:/Examples find -iname mystuff. You can run a case-insensitive search with the given name by using -iname instead of -name. To search a file for a particular string, provide the string and filename as arguments: grep 'some text' /etc/ssh/sshd_config By default, the find command is case sensitive. Using grep allows you to filter that output in order to find only the data that’s relevant. Then she counts the number of accounts that have /bin/false as the shell. With the third command she checks which users are not using, but accounts with the shell are not displayed. Then she displays the line numbers containing this search string. When performing administrative tasks on your Linode, many commands will give you more information than you need.
